“My expectations were high based on the presenters and the agenda. The program
exceeded my expectations.
I would highly recommend this program to colleagues - it is
well worth the time and money
One of the best summer professional development options for pursuing leadership growth
. I learned a great deal, gained more confidence regarding my pursuit of a larger leadership role in schools, and expanded my network of colleagues and mentors, folks that I trust will provide great support as I continue my work.”

“This was the
multicultural professional development I have had. Rosetta Lee was amazing and inspiring and our breakout leaders were wonderful. I came with modest expectations and was blown away by the openness and genuine collegial spirit of this event. Rosetta set the perfect tone and the challenging conversations of the afternoon flowed easily from there. And I think we need to hear this information repeatedly for it to truly sink all the way in.”

ADVIS Annual Report & Membership Renewal
“A dynamic community of independent schools in the Greater Delaware Valley and beyond, ADVIS enriches and sustains schools through advocacy, thought leadership, professional development, and networking opportunities.” ~ADVIS Mission Statement
Dear ADVIS Heads of School,
As we celebrate ADVIS’s 35th year, I am very proud to highlight the value of ADVIS membership today.
Please take a few moments to review the
Professional Development Report for 2016-17
- doing so will reinforce the strong return on investment of ADVIS membership (and also offer a brief preview of offerings for the year ahead). Once again, ADVIS enjoyed record participation in its professional development programs, with attendance up 18% against the 114% participation growth that we experienced the previous year. Ninety-five percent of member schools participated in at least one program (93% last year); 68% attended five or more programs (compared to 62% last year). We are pleased to again have achieved high ratings re. programs meeting attendees’ expectations based on the program description, a measure of excellence for which we consistently strive.
We are especially proud to highlight the statistics related to
programs and the added value this program track brings to ADVIS membership. Please make note of the
Cheryl Irving Cultural Competency Institute for Educators
on August 25th, which is especially helpful for new faculty and staff to your school to attend, but also useful for all staff to have a common experience and language as a point of reference. This year we launch the inaugural
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Conference
on Friday, October 6th. With Mahzarin Banaji, author of
Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People
as the keynote speaker, we already have over 750 folks registered – don't miss this opportunity for your administrative team, faculty and staff!
In another area of focus, we dedicate nearly 10% of the annual operating budget to our major regional marketing campaign, with no surcharge to schools for this service. The campaign is timed to the fall, and more and more, the winter and spring admission cycles, primarily through public radio and family newspaper and website placements designed to equitably blanket our entire membership region. These spots seek to make the case for independent education, provide useful information, debunk myths, and ultimately direct folks to our website to utilize the prominent school search function there to find and learn more about
Long-time members know the many additional services ADVIS provides. We produce an extensive annual retrospective
analysis of regional enrollment trends
by every major sub-segment of our membership. We monitor and regularly update the

documents that schools rely on for guidance to best serve families and maintain professionalism and collegiality. The ADVIS website serves as a central clearing house for
open administrative positions
, posted at no fee for member schools – it is our most visited page! We place group advertisements of the

that is required by the IRS to maintain your 501 c 3 status, effecting economies of scale and ensuring that this important task is not overlooked. The

Projects on the docket this year include exploration of interest in piloting use of a common application for our schools, and a grant application to support a major initiative around collaborative and innovative work to support school sustainability. ADVIS membership yields tangible benefits for your school, your trustees, your administrative team, your faculty and staff, and you. Your school membership renewal invoice has been sent directly to your Business Office, and the form to update membership information has been sent to your assistant (or your designee - if this person has changed, please let us know). Please ensure that it is completed promptly, as it feeds our online database which in turn supports both the School Search function on our website, and our Online Membership Directory (if you haven’t used this yet, be certain to check it out). For the third consecutive year, we are extremely pleased to maintain an overall increase to the budget line item for membership fees of less than 2% - 1.7% to be exact, or just $.25 per enrolled student, budgeted as is our custom based on our confirmation of your enrollment shortly after school opening last year. The actual increase of course varies by school, depending on overall school size and enrollment fluctuations over the previous year.
As always, I welcome your questions and feedback. We very much value your participation in the association and look forward to serving you in the 2017-18 year. Best wishes for a summer that offers time to relax with family and friends, and refreshed energy for the school year ahead!
