Waldorf schools educate the whole child -- head, heart, and hands -- to impart meaning to their lives. They offer a comprehensive education that is culturally and aesthetically rich. The parents are an important component of the child's relationship with the school and with the Class Teacher who remains with the same class from 1st through 8th grade. Evaluations, not grades are given at the elementary level. Artistic activity is incorporated into the study of mathematics, science, history, and language.  All students learn two foreign languages beginning in 1st grade, play musical instruments, and take part in handwork, gardening, drama, fine arts, and woodworking. There is a full athletic program. Main Lessons are taught in blocks of two to three hours per day, lasting up to five weeks each. The curriculum is like an ascending spiral: subjects are revisited with greater depth allowing new insights. Kimberton Waldorf School, founded in 1941, is the second oldest Waldorf school in North America, and is situated on an active 430-acre biodynamic dairy farm with fields and woods bordering on French Creek.
