2018-2019 Membership Renewal Information ~ Annual Report
Annual Report ~ Membership Renewal Information, June 2018
“The conference was
well organized and run. Unbelievable! I've been to many huge conferences and you all deserve the highest accolades.”
First time I have actually enjoyed a conference in my life!
~2017 DEI Conference attendees
“The keynote speaker was amazing...
captivating, interesting and hilarious
, in addition to the in depth and thorough approach she took to addressing the information. I very much appreciated her willingness to address
tactics to ensure equity, justice and support in a classroom
that did not involve merely 'having a conversation.'”
~2017 Cheryl Irving Cultural Competency Institute attendee
topic aligned wonderfully with the intended audience
. I think it was well-suited as a workshop model for trustees and head to reflect and think through critical topics together. The recognition by ADVIS that change in education is speeding up and that we need to determine how we orient toward the future was welcome and refreshing.”
“Engaging, perfect pacing, informative, humorous,
will be able to apply ideas to our situation.
~2017 Annual Trustee Conference participants
“This presentation was excellent! Very talented and dynamic speaker and fundraiser. She offered
good solutions to potentially sticky conversations
. Very helpful tactics and tips that could be applied in some way
for everyone in the room
, regardless of school or role in their office - even for seasoned fundraisers!
Has already impacted my work.

ADVIS Annual Report To The Membership
“A dynamic community of independent schools in the Greater Delaware Valley and beyond, ADVIS enriches and sustains schools through advocacy, thought leadership, professional development and networking opportunities.” ~ADVIS Mission Statement
Dear ADVIS Members,
It is that time of year again - time to renew your ADVIS membership. Personally, I never think twice about renewing, I would be hard pressed to find a reason not to renew our school’s membership is this fine organization. At a time in our independent school world where the term value proposition has become commonplace, I can think of no other organization to which my school belongs that has a stronger value proposition. The professional development is outstanding, always timely and current. Now, with MCRC under the ADVIS umbrella, the range of offerings has only broadened and thus the value of membership has increased. Barbara, Jen and Mary work hard to create important experiences for the members of our school communities and each year the offerings are both fresh and expanded. I sincerely hope that you will join with me and renew your membership today so that you and your faculty and staff can continue to be lifelong learners in our field of education.
Victoria C. Yatzus,
Board Chair, ADVIS; Head of School, The Independence School
Dear ADVIS Heads of School
Please take a moment to review the
Professional Development Report for 2017-18
– it will affirm Vicky’s message and offer a sneak preview of plans for the coming year. ADVIS is on a roll! As we complete our third year of MCRC@ADVIS, we are proud to have hosted the inaugural DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) Conference this past October, our largest event ever, with nearly 1100 attendees, 67 workshops, and two nationally known keynote speakers. And, yet again, we enjoyed record participation in our professional development programs and achieved excellent feedback, in particular on meeting attendees’ expectations based on the description, a benchmark we hold dear.
Although without doubt quality professional development and bringing folks together is our “hedgehog”, we do much more. An important service we offer is marketing and advocating for independent education throughout the region – we allocate nearly 10% of our annual operating budget for this; unlike many associations, there is no surcharge for this service. These radio and carefully selected magazine and newspaper placements make the case for independent education and direct folks to our website. There they find the prominent school search function front and center on our home page and can learn more about our schools,
school. And we are always on standby to respond to media queries. This year, we were proud to publish a statement in support of the NAIS Student and School Safety Statement in response to the school shooting in Parkland, FL.
Highlights of other services we provide follow:
analysis of regional enrollment trends
by major sub-segment of our membership
Guidelines for Best Practice in Admissions and Marketing Independent Schools
, monitored and periodically updated
Guidelines for Best Practice in Responding to Media Surveys and Inquiries
Recommendation as to Data Points to Include on School Websites
, both offer guidance to maintain collegiality and best serve families
open administrative positions
on our website - no fee for member schools and historically our most visited page!
Placement of group advertisements of the
Policy of Nondiscrimination
required by the IRS to maintain your 501 c 3 status - ensures that this important task is not overlooked, saves administrative time and ad expense
ADVIS Common Recommendation Forms
by division - eases the process for families and teachers
In Support of Independent Education
brochures - make the case for annual giving with versions for current parents and alumni
I have saved the best news for last! I am excited to announce that ADVIS has been awarded a $100,000 grant by the Edward E. Ford Foundation (our third), which we will match 1:1, to support transformative efforts and collaborations for financial sustainability amongst our schools. We plan to offer an exposition of exemplars of such work by schools from across the country in the fall, and subsequently we will fund proposals for seed money for exploration and experimentation of transformative models from our schools. Watch for the rollout with further details late summer/early fall!
Your membership renewal invoice has been sent to your Business Office. I am pleased to inform you that, for the
fourth consecutive year
, we are able to maintain an overall increase to the budget line item for membership fees (our largest) that hovers around 2%, at just $.25 per enrolled student (based on your reported enrollment last year). The actual increase varies by school, depending on overall school size and enrollment fluctuations over the previous year. In spite of an overall decrease in the total aggregate number of students in our 134 schools, we are able to effect a minimum increase in large part due to our corporate underwriting efforts (typically 17% of our operating budget comes from corporate and foundation support) and the prudent investing of our reserve funds.
I very much enjoy connecting to provide support and resources and to discuss your questions and feedback – please call the office or email at any time. We truly value your participation in the association and are eagerly planning for 2018-19. Until then, please accept my very best wishes for a wonderful summer full of fun times with family and friends and rest and renewal for the year ahead!
