MCRC@ADVIS DEI Conference: 10/11/19
Sex and Gender 101: Who's Who and What's What?
Introductory: New to topic / subject matter
Building Capacity: Skills, Competencies, & Processes for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
Round 1 only
Al Vernacchio, N-12 Sexuality Education Coordinator, Friends' Central School
What are the essential qualities for being a male or female? Are they different than the essential qualities for being a man or woman? What about those who don't fit into any of those categories - either by choice, design, or circumstance? How is sexuality different from sex and gender? Is sexuality something that impacts us every day or only in intimate situations? Educators must be able to navigate this sexual identity landscape in order to create equitable and just classrooms. Attendees will receive guidance on making institutional change in their own schools. The presenter will share suggestions for best practices and policies/procedures that schools can put in place.
Too many educators are not well versed in the differences between sex and gender, which can lead to classroom or school practices that are, intentionally or unintentionally, discriminatory to students (and other community members - parents, staff, alums).
Participants will be able to:
define the terms: sex, gender, gender identity, and gender expression
name an example of gender scripts that are active in their own school community
name a behavior that would constitute a gender violation in their own school community
explain the connection between traditional gender scripts and privilege
