Defamation ~ The Play
Part of the MCRC@ADVIS "Critical Conversations" Series.
Nationally acclaimed, DEFAMATION is a riveting courtroom drama that explores the highly charged issues of race, religion, gender, class and the law with a twist: the audience is the jury.
More than a play, DEFAMATION is a unique opportunity to engage in civil discourse about the most pressing social issues of our day.
The premise is a civil suit: A South Side African-American woman sues a Jewish North Shore real estate developer for defamation. The legal issue is whether or not she was falsely accused of stealing his watch and causing her financial harm. The trial runs 70 minutes. What follows is a 15-minute audience deliberation led by the judge. The judge polls the audience twice - before the deliberation begins and at its end. The final vote ‘for the plaintiff’ or ‘for the defendant’ decides the outcome of the trial.
Schools are encouraged to continue the discussion back on their own campuses where the conversation about race, class, religion and all ‘isms’ can grow richer.
Program Fees: ADVIS Members pay $60 per Adult attendee, $10 per Student.
Important Registration Information for Groups of Students: We hope you will consider bringing groups of high school students as well as faculty and staff to this performance. The students must be under adult supervision, as they would on a school field trip, for the duration of their time at the event. Please be sure to take all necessary steps in obtaining, and providing to ADVIS, permission/releases for all students to attend – just as you would if this were a school field trip. Before attending each school will be required to complete this GOOGLE FORM with a list of students. Groups are limited to 20 students per school - if you anticipate needing more student "tickets" please call ADVIS at your earliest convenience to be placed on a wait-list for additional seating. All student permission forms should be sent in advance to Mary Cardona at email@example.com or to the following address:
