Benchmark School is committed to helping bright students who learn differently, or have yet to reach their academic potential, develop the confidence, strategies, and knowledge to become lifelong learners, thinkers, and problem-solvers.

Benchmark School was founded in 1970 as a not-for-profit, independent day school serving bright children between the ages of 6 and 14 who learn differently.

Typically Benchmark students have not met with success in a regular classroom. Benchmark's primary goal is to prepare these children to re-enter the educational mainstream with the skills necessary for success. The teacher/student ratio is approximately 1:3.

In addition to approximately 185 full-time students, Benchmark runs a summer school program that serves 230+ students annually who use the program to keep up with their reading skills or as enrichment. Benchmark’s program for decoding is widely used in schools throughout the country.

In 1986, Benchmark School received the U.S. Dept. of Education’s Excellence in Education Award. In addition, Benchmark was selected as an exemplary program featured on videotapes developed by the National Center for the Study of Reading and distributed by the International Reading Association. Benchmark was also chosen as an application school by the James S. McDonnell Foundation.
