Professional Bio
John Gulla became the Executive Director of the Edward E. Ford Foundation on July
1, 2013. EE Ford, in its 70+ years of making grants, has distributed over $140,000,000 in grants to approximately 1000 different independent schools, grants that have also helped these schools leverage an additional $160,000,000 in matching grants. In this role, he has made approximately 400 visits to schools in 43 states, representing the full range of independent schools. In addition, he has written dozens of articles, is often invited to speak to groups of independent school people, participate in presentations and panels, and work to advance the work of the schools the foundation aims to serve.
For the preceding 14 years, Gulla was Head of School at The Blake School, a 125 year-old school enrolling over 1400 students on, at the time, three campuses, in and around Minneapolis. He has also held administrative and teaching positions (physics, mathematics, and history of science) at Riverdale Country School, Isidore Newman, and St. Ann’s in Brooklyn.
A graduate of Teachers College, Columbia University, and Amherst College, he grew up the son of two public school teachers just outside Boston. He has served as a Board member of the Fund for Teachers organization since its inception in 1998, as well as several other Boards, such as ACLUMH, ISACS, MAIS, and Milkweed Editions.
